Contrary to popular belief, the plastic containers in our homes may be the items we need to be the most careful with. They are not indestructable so we need to care for them.
They house our meals everyday, whether it be the kids lunch, snacks for work or the crucial elements to a picnic, we would struggle without them. If cared for properly, our plastic containers can be once-off purchases that last us a lifetime.
IN ORDER TO GET THE LONGEST POSSIBLE LIFESPAN OUT OF YOUR PLASTIC CONTAINERS, KEEP THE FOLLOWING TIPS IN MIND:
TRY TO HAND WASH YOUR CONTAINERS
This way, the water won’t get hot enough to warp the plastic. If you only have time to use the dishwasher, then make sure you put your containers on the bottom rack only. The top rack gets much hotter during the wash cycle.
KEEP THEM ODOURLESS
To keep your plastic containers odourless and fresh, pour some vinegar into them and leave them to soak for a few minutes. The smells will be gone and so will your nausea!
If you’ve stored something in your container that has left a stain, make a paste from baking soda and warm water and leave it in your container overnight. The stains should wash right off the next morning.
MAINTAIN ITS SHAPE
To maintain the shape of your containers, do not put them in the microwave. Rather transfer your food from your container to a plate when it’s time to heat it up. Do not put container lids in the microwave. This is a guaranteed way to warp your lids and cause them to no longer be functional.
Now that your containers are properly cared for, what’s the best way to organise them?
HERE ARE SOME POINTERS TO HELP YOU ON YOUR WAY TO COMPLETE ORGANISATIONAL BLISS:
Use a drying rack or old CD tower to organise your container lids so you never have a container without a partner again!
Use drawer dividers to make space for each container size and always ensure you put them in their rightful spot.
If you spend way too much time searching for matching container sets, then store your containers with their lids on. It may take up more space, but it will save you a lot of time!
Hopefully this has reminded you how important your little containers are, and inspired you to care for and organise them properly for maximum benefit.
