Most people start off with a clean or somewhat tidy garage. However, as time passes, the space that used to be for storing your car, has become a general storage room or, worse, a dumping ground for all the items you don’t use every day but don’t want to get rid of or the items you should get rid of but keep forgetting to.
USE THESE CLEVER DIY TIPS TO TIDY UP YOUR GARAGE FOR ONCE AND FOR ALL:
1. CLEAR THE CLUTTER
The first step to proper organising is to get rid of anything that you no longer truly need. Consider how often you use the old items you keep in the garage – do you need them? Do you want them? Make a pile of these items and donate, recycle, or bin them.
2. A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING AND EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE
The reason most people don’t keep their garage clean and tidy even after an initial clean is that they don’t have a plan in place. Take every item out of your garage and have a good look at the empty space in front of you. What is the best way to organise it? Where should the main items go and will they be safely stored and easily accessible once they’ve found their place? Draw up a plan and get organising.
3. OFF THE FLOOR, ONTO THE WALL…
Install wall shelves and get items off the floor. This will save you space, allow for easier access and movement, and create a sense of better organisation overall. You can also use a cubby hole system with a bookshelf style to hold smaller bottles and jars. Dedicate each cubby hole to a different focus, for example, painting tools, nails, bathroom fittings, DIY items etc. For smaller tools and accessories, you could also use a pegboard with outlines to show where each item should be stored.
4. …OR GO UP
Install some roof hanging shelves or racks for storing lightweight plastic boxes, appliance boxes, scrap pieces of wood, and items that you don’t use often but still want to keep. As with every box in your garage, make sure to label them properly with a list of the items contained within.
5. NAIL THOSE GOODIES TO THE WALL
Have a small kitchen? Or don’t want cleaning products and gardening tools in your house? Store these against the wall, using hooks and nails so that the items hang together neatly and within easy reach. Make sure that these items are always returned to their place after use so that they are available when you need them.
6. BACK TO SCHOOL STYLE
Dedicate tool boxes (check out our Magyver Tool Bin), steel lockers, storage units, or plastic boxes and plastic storage towers to each member of your family. Clearly label these containers with each person’s name. Use them to store sporting goods, crafting goods, or mementos.
