Traveling with kids can be a logistical nightmare. From making sure they have their clothes and food packed, to entertainment, and any other form of disaster management, it’s surprising that we even remember our own luggage.
HERE ARE 5 SIMPLE WAYS TO ALLEVIATE AS MUCH STRESS AS POSSIBLE
BE SNACK READY
Make sure you have lots of food on hand in case of delays or time setbacks. There are few things worse than a toddler tantrum on an empty stomach (for you, and your child!). Encourage them to eat something small every couple of hours, and make sure you do the same.
Having ready-packed tupperwares or lunch boxes means you won’t have to fork out cash at cafés and restaurants, and will more than likely guarantee consistent blood sugar levels and therefore a more consistent mood for everyone.
Avoid the temptation of feeding your kids sugary snacks and keeping them at bay with sweets. This will lead to a sugar meltdown that you’ll be regretting in a few hours.
REMEMBER THE MEDICINE
Whether your child is on a chronic medication or not, you should always have a little first-aid kit with compartments that are easily accessible in case of nausea, cuts, or headaches.
KEEP THEM ENTERTAINED
Make sure they have something to play with that distracts them. A pack of colouring pencils or crayons and a small notebook are easily transportable and will keep them busy for hours.
DON’T FORGET THE BABY WIPES
These little things come in handy when you’re in public spaces like bathrooms or restaurants and something doesn’t look quite as clean or hygienic as you’d like. You can take one from your stash and give something a quick wipe down to get rid of any unwanted germs.
KEEP THE NOISY TOYS AT HOME
Think of the other people on your plane, bus, or train when packing toys for the kids. It’s always nicer to stay on good terms with those around you, and getting someone frustrated or upset with your moving, honking train set just isn’t worth it when they’re around you for hours.
Traveling with kids really doesn’t need to be a traumatic experience. If you make sure you are prepared beforehand for a few worst-case scenarios, you should be absolutely fine.
